I received a question regarding the existence of God. It is a question so common, that it causes more converts to atheism and agnosticism than the practicing of science does! (not a statistical fact, rather an observation I’ve made.)
“If there is a God out there, why is there so much evil on Earth?”
This problem of the existence of evil is a very emotional problem, and, as I’ve said before, religion should be looked at from the stand point of a search for objective truth, not good feelings. Having said that, the problem of the existence of evil has a logical argument to it. That being: If God exists and is both all powerful and perfectly good, then wouldn’t he have the will and the means to eradicate evil? The simple and short answer is that God gave man free will, the freedom to choose God’s will (good) or the desires of our flesh (evil). Evil is the natural result of humans choosing selfishness.
For a perfectly complete answer I suggest you read The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis. This very short and easy to read book answers this question thoroughly and concisely. If you don’t have the drive to go to amazon.com, your library, or local bookstore, then I’ve found an article which skims the surface of this philosophical question in an accurate and easy to understand way. I love the questions!
